Fes is the second largest city in Morocco with over a million inhabitants. It is the oldest of the imperial cities, and was the capital of the Kingdom up until 1925. The city has one of the most ancient and largest medinas in the world. Fes is listed in the UNESCO heritage for sites of particular historical interest, it is universally recognized as the spiritual capital of Morocco for its over 300 mosques, and it is also called “West Mecca” and “Athens of Africa”. The local Saiss airport is well served by local and international aircompanies and it is therefore increasingly becoming a city of arrival and/or departure for many tours of the Imperial Cities, but also for those to the south and the Sahara desert.
